When will the RGNAU at Fursatganj be Inaugurated?

The inauguration ceremony of Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University (RGNAU) established in Fursatganj, Amethi, was cancelled earlier on August 17 because the two key invitees, Rahul Gandhi and UP chief minister Aditya Nath Yogi, had not turned up. (Read - RGNAU)

The question - when will be the inauguration - is back in spotlight since the Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is on a three-day tour of his parliamentary constituency Amethi from 4th October.

As per the University and Congress sources, the visit to the university was not on Rahul's agenda during his three-day stay in Amethi this time either.

- RGNAU has been planned as an autonomous body under the administrative control of the ministry of civil aviation with an aim to facilitate and promote aviation studies, teaching, training and research.

- For setting up of the RGNAU, nearly 26 acres of land in the close vicinity of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Udan Akademi, at Fursatganj has been identified. Everything seems to be ready, and the inauguration of the university could give the vital lift to its plans.

- RGNAU has signed an MoU with GMR Aviation Academy for Joint PG Diploma in Aviation/Airport Operations which is an employment-oriented programme focused on providing trained manpower to the industry.

- RGNAU may launch MBA programme in aviation management in near future. It may launch its flagship programme by 2018.

- RGNAU shall also be affiliating colleges/ institutes for BSc (Hons) in aircraft maintenance.

But, today RGNAU is keenly waiting for its inauguration ceremony and commencement of its envisaged courses thereafter. The recruitment of faculty and subsequent enrolment of students are presently held up.

This is neither surprising nor unprecedented. This is neither the first time when the citizens of the country are witnessing such a situation, nor will it be the last time. People have seen its start like this; they now may well assume the manner of functioning of the University in the coming days. They wonder whether this is the beginning or this is the beginning of the end! Analysts predict that it would be a world-class University of Aviation; but it should first become Amethi class, then UP class, and then it should begin aiming higher.

"There is still no plan as to when the university's professional courses would begin full-fledged and we are considering to start only smaller duration programmes like a five-day management development programme (MDP) for the time being," RGNAU vice-chancellor Air Vice-Marshall Nalin Tandon, told media.
